How To Legally Protect Your Blog 101

The real reason why you must and should protect it, revealed!

You and I both know, there is a TON that goes into starting a blog. You invest a lot of time. This is one of the main reasons to protect it.

How horrible would it be if you didn’t do something correctly and ended up getting sued? Poof! Bye-bye Bloggie. I. would. be. devastated.

I know, doesn’t sound fun, huh? Didn’t think so. To be honest, the legal stuff is the last thing we think about when starting our blog.

The legal stuff doesn’t seem as important as the other things, until it kind of smacks you in the face and it’s the only thing you can think about until you know it done. I mean don’t the right way, too.

Well, you don’t know what you don’t know! Legally protecting your blog is so very much important than you even know.

Did you know?

Having legal pages on your blog is required by law.

Including the legal pages are a requirement for working with brands along with being required legally, too.

Do you plan on making money with your blog?

Yes? Well, many affiliate companies will not accept you if you don’t have the legal pages, especially the privacy page.

Want to learn more about why you need to legally protect your blog?

I would recommend that you enroll in this free legal course.

The course goes through the basics of legally protecting your blog and why. It is important you understand the basics. You want to at least know enough to be deadly should a situation arise. It’s a great idea to educate yourself.

The BEST PART? Did I mention this LEGAL COURSE IS FREE?! Give that link back there a quick click to a quick and FREE legal course.

Give me all the freebies please!!

So, what are the most important legal pages to have on my blog?

Great question! Let’s go through each one, one-by-one.

The first page up is:

1. Privacy Policy

A privacy policy states all the ways you collect data from your blog visitors. If you collect any personal data, then it is required by law to have one on your blog.

Depending on what type of blog you have, and the tools and resources you use, will all vary on the type of personal data you collect.

For example, if you allow comments on your blog, you are more than likely collecting names and email addresses.

To summarize, most blogs collect data from their visitors, meaning a privacy policy is required by law.

2. Terms and Conditions

Terms and Conditions is the page that represents the contract between your actual blog and your readers. They are also called Terms of Use and Terms of Services.

It’s a page on your blog that serves as a sort of Rule Book.

Some of the points included and reviewed on the Terms & Conditions page are as follows:

  • reliance on content
  • limitation of liability
  • disclaimers
  • comments

3. Disclaimer

A disclaimer is a page that lets you disclaim legal liability for the content you publish on your blog.

No matter what your blog is about, it is important to have a disclaimer page.

Also, if you write a post about sensitive topics (like medical topics, health and wellness and legal) it’s good to also put a short disclaimer at the beginning of the post (like I did with this one!)

4. Disclosures Page

The purpose of a disclosure relative to blogging is to disclose any sort of paid relationships with any brands. These would be the ones you have through affiliate links or brand sponsorships.

With that, you are required by the law to tell your audience that you are being paid for something. A disclosure page is necessary if you work with brands and intend to make money with your blog.

Along with a disclosure page, it is also important to have an affiliate disclosure statement in every post that has affiliate links.

It is especially important to note that your affiliate disclosure must be BEFORE any affiliate links.

4 Easy Steps to Add an Affiliate Disclosure to Every Post:

  1. Open the post you want to edit and then write your affiliate disclosure in a new block.
  2. Click on the three dots in the top right corner, then click on “add to reusable blocks”
  3. Go ahead and name your block “Affiliate Disclosure” and click Save.
  4. Next time you go to write a new post, just click on “Add a New Block” and choose your reusable “Affiliate Disclosure” block.

Super Easy, right? Now you don’t have to write your disclosure every time. You can even do a copy and paste, as well.

Alright. Let us get to the good stuff already!

Tell me HOW I am going to put all this into action. We discussed the what and why for all the legal pages you will need to have on your blog so YES let me tell you how, now.

Alrighty, now you have a few different options here:
